Roughan & O'Donovan Innovative Solutions (ROD-IS) is one of a consortium of 15 partners involved in a new EU-funded project, Safe 10-T Rail.
The project aims to provide a means of eradicating sudden infrastructure failures by implementing remote sensing techniques and wireless sensor networks.
The project kicked off in May 2017.
European research team
The project brings together a research team of civil engineers, computer scientists, big data managers and sociologists from the Netherlands, Ireland, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium.
The team provides expertise in:
- Risk based assessment of infrastructure
- Artificial intelligence (AI)
- Wireless sensor networks
- Data management
It will work collaboratively with infrastructure managers from:
- Network Rail
- Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment
- Croatian Railways
Prediction Framework
The team will develop a safety and maintenance prediction framework for critical road, rail and inland waterway infrastructure.
The framework will allow the:
- Detection of failures to infrastructure before they occur
- Identification of highly stressed zones at risk of deterioration
Role of ROD-IS

ROD-IS researchers will be developing protocols for advanced, real-time condition assessments of transport infrastructure assets.
