The contract for the completion of the Coonagh to Knockalisheen Distributor Road Scheme was executed last Wednesday, 15 January, by Limerick City and County Council and Wills Brothers Ltd. The €31m project will unlock significant economic and social opportunities for Moyross and the wider area, improve the quality of life of local communities by providing them with better access to essential services and education, and open up the entire Moyross estate with a second entrance and exit.

The proposed road development is located on the northwestern outskirts of Limerick City and will link the Coonagh Roundabout with the Knockalisheen Road close to the Limerick/Clare county boundary. It consists of a a new 2.1km high quality dual carriageway, with cycleways and footways on each side; major improvements to existing roads; and significant associated works, such as the diversion of live services, new sewer systems and landscaping.

ROD, in partnership with MRG Consulting Engineers, brought the scheme from initial constraints study through route selection and preliminary design to planning, detailed design and tender. We are now supporting Limerick City and County Council in providing site supervision and contract administration during construction, close out and review.

The project will be delivered in phases, with the dual carriageway between Coonagh and Knockalisheen scheduled to open after the first 12 months. The entire project is expected to be completed in 24 months.

ROD Technical Director, Patrick Grennan, said: “I was delighted to represent Roughan & O’Donovan at the contract signing at Moyross Community Centre last week. I will be undertaking the administration of the contract as Employer’s Representative, ably supported by our site team, led by Project Resident Engineer, Mike Gibbons. Congratulations to Limerick City & County Council and to our procurement team, led by ROD’s Senior Resident Engineer, Emily Alfred, on advancing the project to the construction stage.”

Dr Pat Daly, Director General of Limerick City and County Council, highlighted the broader impact of the project: "The Coonagh to Knockalisheen Distributor Road Scheme is crucial for improving connectivity and supporting future economic development. This infrastructure will facilitate greater access to essential services, employment, and educational facilities, making a significant difference in the lives of the people in Moyross and surrounding areas."

Cathaoirleach of the Metropolitan District of Limerick, Cllr. Kieran O’Hanlon, commented: "This project represents a major investment in the future of Moyross. It will not only improve transport links but also attract investment and development to the area.”
