Herring Bridge in Great Yarmouth has won the coveted Road Bridge Project of the Year Award at the NCE Bridges Awards 2024.
The awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Leonardo Royal Hotel London St Paul’s on Thursday evening, 18 July. The event was sponsored by Stantec.
The awards recognise the best of the best in civil engineering consultancies, from outstanding projects to professionals who have shaped the landscape of bridge engineering.
Herring Bridge is a complex bridge, marine and urban works scheme that sought to transform travel across the town of Great Yarmouth by connecting communities on either side of the harbour, easing traffic congestion, shortening journey times, and improving journey reliability.
The scheme's main feature is a practical yet beautifully engineered 50m clear span, twin bascule bridge that carries two lanes of vehicular traffic in each direction and incorporates a footpath and a cycle way to provide pedestrians and cyclists with safe passage over the water.
The project won high praise from the judging panel, who described it as an "impressive scheme" that succeeded in "enhancing community wellbeing and resilience, while blending seamlessly with the landscape and incorporating innovative construction methods."
Roughan & O’Donovan (ROD) led the detailed design of the project on behalf of BAM Farrans, a joint venture between BAM UK & Ireland and Farrans Construction. Our design partners were H&H and Lanpro.
The shortlist for the Road Bridge Project of the Year award included several fine projects, including the A487 New Dyfi Bridge, Beaulieu Parkway Project, A939 Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge and Pontydd Bodfel and Bodefail Bridges.
