Roughan & O'Donovan has been appointed by Mayo County Council to prepare tender documentation for the N5 Westport to Turlough Road Design & Build contract. The commission also includes the administration and supervision of the contract.
The project comprises a 20km Type 2 dual carriageway from Westport to east of Castlebar, a 2.5km Type 2 single carriageway bypass to the north of Westport and a 2.3km Type 3 single carriageway section of the N59.
Roughan & O'Donovan undertook constraint and selection studies for the scheme in 2010 and, since securing planning approval in 2014, has supported the council and its National Roads Design Office in the delivery of advance works contracts, including:
- Detailed topographic survey
- Detailed ground investigation
- Fencing
- Hedgerow clearance
- High and medium voltage cable diversions
- Archaeological investigations
Considerable effort was also required to secure accommodation works agreements with the 250 affected landowners.
In commenting on the project, Jim Thorpe, Director, Roughan & O'Donovan, said:
Our immediate efforts will focus on developing the planning design into a specimen design. We will be taking account of the significant changes in design standards introduced over the past 4 years and addressing the planning conditions imposed by An Bord Pleanála.
