Cork City Council has appointed Roughan & O'Donovan to act as consultants for the rehabilitation of St. Patrick's bridge, a 90m long 3-span masonry arch bridge linking the city's main street to the iconic St. Patrick's Hill.

Dating from the mid nineteenth-century, the bridge has been described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as 'a significant contributor to the architectural heritage of the city.'

Remedial works mainly consist of:

  • Repairing the original cast iron lighting columns
  • Creating an additional 6 duplicate lighting columns
  • Cleaning and repairing the original bridge stonework
  • Replacing the footways and carriageway surfacing

To illuminate the stonework, it is proposed to install lighting on the bridge elevations and quay walls. Additional high level lighting columns will be constructed along the eastern footway to illuminate the carriageway.

Roughan & O'Donovan has made the following appointments:

  • JCA Architects to advise on suitable measures to repair and conserve the bridge stone fabric
  • Meitheal Design Partners to design the new architectural lighting features
  • Kevin Cleary and John Kelleher for the design of electrical works for the new lighting

The project is being progressed in 2 phases:

Phase 1 includes the removal of the existing cast iron lighting columns on the bridge parapets, transporting them for repair and replication and returning them complete and ready to be installed as part of the second works contract.  It is expected to be completed in early 2018.

Phase 2 is the more substantial works contract and is currently in the detailed design phase.  It is expected to begin on site next spring.
