Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), ROD-IS and Roughan & O’Donovan have begun work on a risk-based geometric design evaluation of Ireland’s road legacy network.
A geometric design evaluation can be used to identify locations on roads and highways where accidents could conceivably be higher. Improvement works and resources can then be concentrated on these sections to significantly improve safety performance.
Mark Tucker, Manager, ROD-IS, described geometric road design consistency as critical for any network to achieve smooth and safe traffic operation. ROD-IS researchers will, he said:
develop a geometric design approach based on a site-specific risk evaluation of the potential for collision occurrence.
