About the role

As a senior resident engineer on the Narrow Water Bridge Project, you will be part of the site-based team responsible for the supervision of the construction of the Narrow Water Bridge. You will report directly to the project resident engineer.

This project provides a new crossing over the Newry River to the north of Carlingford Lough. The single carriageway road and bridge, which have a combined length of 600m, will link the R173 Omeath to Newry Road in Co Louth with the A2 Newry to Warrenpoint Road in Co Down.

The bridge consists of a 138.50m fixed cabled-stayed main span and a 56.8 m rolling bascule opening span designed to span the Newry River. The cable-stayed, moveable bridge will accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and vehicular traffic.

The works will primarily involve:

  • marine works consisting of combi-pile cofferdams, piling for pier foundations, construction of reinforced concrete pile caps, piers and abutments
  • fabrication of steel superstructure for fixed and rolling bascule spans
  • incremental construction of cable-stayed main spans
  • rolling bascule span deck launch
  • mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control, and automation (MEICA) for the rolling bascule span and associated control room and building
  • bridge deck finishes, including parapets, railings, lighting etc.
  • construction of pile supported navigation tower, bridge fendering system and Aids to Navigation
  • construction of an approach road, roundabouts, variable message signs for opening bridge, control building and associated site development works, greenway underpass and associated greenway ramp and reinforced earth retaining wall

Duties

Your duties will include supervision of:

  • all marine works for the bridge structure, including cofferdams and reinforced concrete substructures
  • all civil and marines works for the construction of the road
  • bridge deck superstructure erection and finishes
  • the movable spans and associated infrastructure and commissioning of same

Essential

  • Degree in engineering or construction management (Level 8 in the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent)
  • At least 10 years’ postgraduate experience in civil engineering works (preferably marine and bridgeworks), with a minimum of five years’ site-based experience on bridge, marine or civil works
  • Experience in the role of senior resident engineer (or equivalent) on civil engineering works, including at least one steel bridge (fixed or movable) over a river with a construction value more than €10 million (exclusive of VAT)
  • Experience in administering the public works forms of contract
  • Experience of civil engineering projects involving construction works over environmentally sensitive watercourses
  • Experience in the review and monitoring of Environmental Operating Plan(s) for civil engineering projects, including at least one project involving works crossing or directly adjacent to environmentally/ecologically designated sites and sensitive watercourses
  • Experience in implementing procedures and systems for accurate record keeping
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety legislation
  • Chartered engineer status (CEng MIEI or equivalent)
  • Good organisational skills
  • Motivated individual with a strong work ethic
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Fluency/high level of proficiency in spoken and written English

Desirable

  • Experience in movable bridges, including supervising and monitoring a team for FAT and SAT acceptance of MEICA components and systems of the movable bridge
  • Experience with construction of cofferdams and marine piling in significant river courses
