Summary

BusConnects Cork is a €600m programme of work that aims to create 75km of new, dedicated bus lanes to the north, west and south of Cork city, and 54km of new cycling and walking infrastructure.

In 2023, the National Transport Authority (NTA) appointed ROD-TYPSA to lead the BusConnects Cork Southwest Strategic Transport Corridor scheme, which comprises almost 19km of high-quality bus, pedestrian cycle infrastructure connecting Ballincollig, Bishopstown and Togher to the city centre.

The Southwest Strategic Transport Corridor scheme is one of three new transport schemes aimed at quadrupling the number of people using public transport in Cork city and increasing the number of people walking and cycling around the city by one third.

Approach

ROD hit the ground running on the project, holding public consultations in UCC and Nemo Rangers GAA Club within weeks of our appointment. Our project team subsequently held community forum meetings for local individuals and groups and hosted online consultations with landowners likely to be affected by the scheme.

Solution

ROD collated traffic and topographical survey data for all three routes, which allowed us to delve deeper into the design process and allay, where possible, any concerns the public may have had about the scheme designs.

We are working closely with the NTA, Cork City Council, and other key stakeholders in finalising the preferred option and progressing the design and assessment phases.

We hope to submit a planning application to An Bord Pleanála in late 2025.
