A symbolic gateway at the threshold between the urban and rural environment
Roughan & O’Donovan provided the full range of design services for a new gateway crossing of the River Garvoge and a high quality single carriageway urban distributor road link for communities north and south of the river.
Working with Sean Harrington Architects, we developed both the conceptual design, including options evaluation, and the design of this landmark bridge consisting of a single span tied steel arch made composite with a concrete deck over 30m high and with a 65m span deck.

Developing a striking bridge design, with a road layout that respected the unique setting, provided a challenge for our team. We considered important ecological and community concerns, including the potential impact on the environmentally sensitive River Garvoge, Lough Gill and the surrounding Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
