Summary
Roughan & O’Donovan (ROD) provided civil and structural design services for the conservation, extension and refurbishment of this 19th century protected structure in Killenard, Co. Laois.
The project team also included Randall McDonnell Architects, Homan & O'Brien Associates, Anthony Cosgrave & Co. and L&M Keating Ltd. as contractor.
Solution
Mount Saint Anne's is a 19th century protected Georgian mansion to which various extensions were added during the 20th century.
This careful restoration project involved over 2000m² of refurbishment works and the development of 1300m² of new build accommodation.
It encompassed demolition of an existing residential wing to facilitate construction of a new 3-storey dining/residential facility and chapel building, and conversion of an existing chapel and stable building into a modern conference centre and residential accommodation.
We enhanced the overall site layout with additional car and bus parking.
We also installed an on-site wastewater treatment system.
Challenge
Carrying out works in a live, operational retreat centre proved challenging but, by careful phasing of the works, the building continued to operate successfully.
Highlights
Using large amounts of structural glazed walls, roof and atria enabled us to preserve the visual line of the existing protected building.
