The Intensive Care Unit at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda.
A state-of-the-art intensive care unit providing a modern, patient-focused environment for the critically ill
Roughan & O’Donovan provided structural engineering design services for a new intensive care unit (ICU) in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda, Co Louth.
The project involved the refurbishment of the existing 4th floor cardiac wards to create an ICU with a total area of 425m2. Additional works were incorporated during the project to upgrade the existing high dependency unit (HDU).
Significant additional plant had to be installed to service the new unit, resulting in additional requirements for access points, plant support mechanisms and cladding supports.
During the works, the ribbed slab construction of the existing building was found to be badly corroded, and a repair method devised.
A special support frame was also designed to enable the contractor to install and adjust new medical pendants to service the ICU.
Significant structural works were required to allow the development to proceed while maintaining the structural stability of the original 1960's building.
