Summary
Our research and development team co-ordinated this CEDR-funded project aimed at providing road owners/managers with best practice tools and methodologies for the risk assessment of ageing critical infrastructure.
Solution
We developed a risk modelling tool for road owners/managers that assesses risk within the context of evolving traffic demands, climate change effects and funding limitations.
The tool considers risk from a variety of perspectives, including:
- safety
- financial
- operational
- commercial
- reputational
Challenges
We examined how traffic growth affects the Eurocode alpha-factors used in site-specific bridge assessment, developing a novel approach to long run traffic simulation and applying it to a range of load effects, spans and rates of traffic growth.
