River Erne Bridge: Winner of the ACEI President’s Award for Innovation and the ICS Overall Award in 2014.
Setting a benchmark for the use of long span bridges to cross sensitive environmental sites, particularly Natura 2000 sites
Roughan & O’Donovan undertook the preliminary design, statutory approvals, detailed design specification and construction supervision of this three span extrados bridge over the River Erne in Co. Cavan.
ACEI President's Award for Innovation 2014 and Irish Concrete Society's Overall Award 2014.
Extending 140m, with a 70m main span over the River Erne, this bridge consists of a slender concrete deck with a double curved soffit that minimises obstructions to views along the river.
Four reinforced concrete pylons provide support by means of saddles to the extradosed cables.
Structurally, the bridge combines the efficiencies generated in traditional prestressed concrete and the use of shallow angled extrados cables.
Producing a structure that would adhere to the principals of geometric design while minimising its impact on the environmentally sensitive river landscape was challenging.
